There are several historic sources of this dance, with inevitable differences. Interpreting them isn't the hard bit, it's deciding which one to do!

Here's how I think they all go:

Playford's version is super-busy in the C part – if you try this, you are quite likely to be saying “Excuse me” a lot! It's possible if both couples keep moving but challenging (Pat Shaw interpreted this version). Lorin's version is more manageable for 2C. Then by Feuillet a more conventional figure with standard timing is substituted.
There are other details that change, but the version that settles down by Academy of Compliments and Woolball is the most approachable. It's the one I'd normally do and also the version Mike has on his website. There are clearly other mongrel options, such as 1C cast into a figure 8 up, then 2C figure 8 down. But now we're into adaptation rather than interpretation.
